Danish Royalty
Sunday I went and saw The Prince and Me with a friend from school. The movie is about a Danish Crown Prince and how he finds his Princess. I thought the movie was quite enjoyable, but there wasn't much truth to it. I've decided to clear up any misgivings the movie gives.
1. Denmark has a Queen. Her husband is the Prince. Though when Fredrik becomes King his wife will be the Queen. A little bit of a double standard.
2. Danish people speak Danish.
3. When most Danes speak English they do it with an American accent; some have a British accent. They don't have French accents or anything mixed.
4. The Danish Royals, though very popular, often mix with the people. They drive their own cars, ride bikes, and are often seen unaccompanied in public.
5. It is perfectly acceptable and quite common for Danish Royals to marry commoners. The Queen married a Frenchman, Crown Prince Fredrik married an Australian and Prince Joachim married a Swiss/Chinese woman.
6. The main castle where the Royals live is in downtown Copenhagen, and is not a large estate.
The Danish Royal family is quite interesting. I've enjoyed getting to experience the pride in which one takes of their royal family. My host sister Brigitte has a theory on royalty vs. Presidents. A President is like a King and Prime Minister combined. You love him because he represents the things you love about your country, but at the same time you dislike him for decisions he makes about the government. Danes don't need to do that. They can love the Royal Family because they don't make the decisions in the government, yet the represent the pride in which one has for ones country. Danes can dislike the prime minister all they want and never feel they are being disloyal to their country.
